Moscow withdraws missile plans

Moscow has shelved plans to station short-range missiles on Europe’s borders according to a Russian news agency. The report quoted an unnamed Russian military official saying the tactical weapons would not now be sent to Kaliningrad, and it is all because Barack Obama has taken over in the White House.
The Iskander missiles were bound for Kaliningrad, right between NATO members Poland and Lithuania. Their planned deployment was a direct response to America’s missile shield which the Bush administration envisaged in Poland and the Czech republic.
Russia saw the shield as a threat. In November, President Medvedev announced his Kaliningrad plan to counter it. Russian-US relations sank to a post-Cold War low.
The leaders spoke by phone on Monday and agreed to stop what the White House called “the drift” between the two countries. America’s man at NATO HQ in Brussels said that, if confirmed, the Russian move would be “a very positive step.”
